Empowerment means

A career you control — not one that controls you

  • Sustainability — income that holds up across seasons
  • Goal-Achievement — turning vision into a working plan
  • Autonomy — your schedule, your terms, your art

Thriving looks like

Showing up fully — on stage and in life

  • Confident — you know your worth and can articulate it
  • Balanced — creative energy without chronic burnout
  • Intentional — every decision moves you forward

If any of this feels familiar… you're in the right place.

Maybe you've taken audition after audition after audition.
You practiced. You did the degrees. You followed the rules.

And somehow… the traditional path still isn't paying you back.

Or maybe you've got the stable job. Congrats — and also…

You're exhausted. Micromanaged. Boxed in. Quietly wondering why music turned into a cage.

Or you're stuck in the middle:
Teaching, gigging, performing, hustling nonstop…
But the income is unpredictable and the stress never shuts up.

That's not failure. That's bad math.

Why
Opus
Exists

A freelance music career isn't a fallback plan. It's a viable, purposeful choice — if you have the right map.

I served as a full-time arts administrator working inside one of the country's top orchestras. I saw firsthand what it meant to work in a structured, salaried role within the classical music world — the consistent paycheck, the health insurance, the structure, the prestige.

"Even with all the external markers of success, I knew it wasn't for me."

The role was fulfilling in many ways, but I felt boxed in. The creativity, flexibility, and autonomy I craved were nowhere to be found. Despite trying to "stick with it" — because society tells us stable, full-time work is the goal — it became clear I was compromising too much of myself to maintain the image of a "successful" music career.

So I walked away — and chose to build something different. Years on the road, one gig at a time, living out of my car, performing, teaching, coaching. Then stepping into arts administration for stability. I've lived both sides: the freelance hustle and the rigid 9-to-5. I've faced burnout, financial uncertainty, and tough career pivots.

Musicians today deserve better than outdated advice and cookie-cutter paths. Opus Freelance is that better map — honest, strategic, and built for how musicians actually work now: teaching, gigging, recording, creating content, and coaching — often all at once.

Clear, actionable strategies

For time, income, teaching, and branding — not vague inspiration, but systems you can implement this week.
